An Analysis of Variability of Travel Behavior within One- Week Period Based on GPS
نویسنده
چکیده
In 1997 the Department of Transportation carried out a one-week study in Lexington, Kentucky in which the cars of 100 households were equipped with GPS and in-car computers. Every stop was logged by the GPS receiver and the purpose of the stop was recorded at real time on an in-car computer. The final report of the study gave descriptions of travel behavior but performed little analysis on the data so collected. Provided a CD-ROM data record of all the transactions from DOT, we propose to address questions such as: 1. How does the week period influence different types of people’s travel activities in a general way? 2. How does the week period influence the variation of people’s travel choices on different days of week? 3. To what extent is the automatic-device-collected data more accurate than the data collected by using traditional methods? In this paper, two physical measurements of trips (duration and frequency) are analyzed to differentiate people’s activity patterns among the days in a week period in terms of types of activities pursued. MONOVA analysis is applied first to illustrate the day-to-day activity variability across the week. Then time series analysis is used further reveal the temporal characteristics of the trip series. Accompanying these, the advantages and disadvantages of using GPS-integrated devices as a means of collecting travel activity data are analyzed.

A GPS - based Analysis of Household Travel Behavior
While characteristics of daily travel behavior have been determined from analyses of the reconstructed household travel behavior recorded in travel diaries, such reconstructions are subject to criticisms that people lie or falsely recall information about destinations, times of travel, trip purpose, trip destination and other critical characteristics, such as under-reporting of short trips and ...

Activity-travel behavior research has hitherto focused on the modeling and understanding of daily time use and activity patterns and resulting travel demand. In this particular paper, an analysis and modeling of weekly activity-travel behavior is presented using a unique multi-week activity-travel behavior data set collected in and around Zurich, Switzerland. The paper focuses on six categories...
متن کاملValue of Travel-Time Reliability: Commuters’ Route-Choice Behavior in the Twin Cities
Executive Summary Travel-time variability is a noteworthy factor in network performance. It measures the temporal uncertainty experienced by users in their movement between any two nodes in a network. The importance of the time variance depends on the penalties incurred by the users. In road networks, travelers consider the existence of this journey uncertainty in their selection of routes. Thi...
متن کاملA portfolio theory of route choice
Although many individual route choice models have been proposed to incorporate travel time variability as a decision factor, they are typically still deterministic in the sense that the optimal strategy requires choosing one particular route that maximizes utility. In contrast, this study introduces an individual route choice model where choosing a portfolio of routes instead of a single route ...

The rapid progress of information technology (IT) may provide us new insights into understanding traffic phenomena, and could help mitigate traffic problems. One of the key applications of IT to traffic and transport analysis is the identification of the location of moving objects using the global positioning system (GPS) . It is expected that detailed traffic analysis could be carried out usin...
